MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Readers

In the last issue I bemoaned the fact that Matching Grants had been (temporarily) stopped. Today I would like to share with you a little bit of history.

Since 1965, the Rotary Foundation has matched contributions for international service projects in 199 countries at a cost of more than $335 million. In 2007-08 alone, the foundation approved $43.8 million for 2,424 matching grant projects in 137 countries.

In December, the Foundation approved the 30,000th Matching Grant. More than 20 children in India with congenital heart defects will soon benefit from the 30,000th Matching Grant awarded by The Rotary Foundation.

The financial crisis will not last forever and we shall be able to access MG funds for our projects again.

Sincerely

Peter Klews

President Peter Clews

KNYSNA ROTARY DONATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL COMPUTERS

On 10 March 2009 the Rotary Club of Knysna donated R43000.00 to Knysna High School. This money will be put toward the total cost of financing their new fully equipped IT Centre. Knysna High School’s computers were so slow and outdated that learners were unable to complete their IT exams within the stipulated time. To date forty new workstations and a powerful server have been installed in the computer lab at Knysna High. These will be networked to current computers in the school as well as new access in 19 classrooms and the media centre. Learners and teachers at Knysna High have gratefully welcomed the technology now available in their classrooms.

EPILEPSY SA WINS AGAIN!

On Sunday 29th March the annual cricket match between Knysna Rotary and Epilepsy South Africa was held at Forever Resorts on Keurbooms River, Plettenberg Bay. After a braai, Epilepsy batted first and the Rotarian bowlers had a job getting them out. The final result of the close-fought engagement was a victory of 101 to 92, in favour of ESA. This annual event is probably the most on-going, non-fund collecting, pleasure-giving project of the Rotary Club of Knysna.

SPORTS SCHOOL RECEIVES ROTARY DONATION

On 11 March 2009 the Rotary Club of Knysna handed over a cheque to the Knysna Sport School Development Trust. This substantial donation, facilitated by Knysna Rotarian Hans Tollenaar, was the result of matching grants from the Rotary Club of Nieuwkoop (in Holland) and Rotary International. The Rotary Club of Knysna has been involved with the Sport School for several years and its most recent donation will benefit a large number of youths from impoverished homes. As drug addiction, domestic violence, alcoholism and prostitution is often part of their lives, sport can build character, teach fairness, team spirit and instil pride in the youngsters, as well as keeping them occupied. CLUB SUPPORTS EARTH HOUR

It’s been called the single biggest community action in history. WWF’s Earth Hour 2009 enjoyed a massive response across the world, including South Africans who switched off their lights on Saturday 28 March 2009 in a visual call for action on climate change. Members of the Rotary Club of Knysna joined the global initiative during which an estimated 4.7 million light bulbs were switched off in South Africa. Thank you for making the world of difference!

A NEW GEYSER FOR VERMONT CENTRE

VermontCentre for the Elderly owns a number of income generating cottages. In one of them a geyser gave up the ghost and, being old, the insurance was not prepared to replace it. This geyser feeds 3 cottages. Vermont was most grateful as the Rotary Club of Knysna came to the rescue and replaced the geyser.
